TMS (MeRT) Therapy for Autism in Valencia & Calabasas, CA

MeRT: A Breakthrough Autism Treatment

MeRT stands for Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy. This non-invasive, drug-free treatment combines comprehensive diagnostic testing using an EEG (electroencephalogram, or brain map) with tailored TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) to help balance brain function. This gentle magnetic stimulation can help the brain process information better and can improve the quality of life for the patient.*

MeRT can be used with any other type of therapy, such as ABA (applied behavior analysis), and may even help those therapies work more effectively.

Please note that our clinic does not diagnose autism, but we treat those who have been diagnosed.

*Results can vary from patient to patient

Autism Treated with MeRT, featured in the Autism Parenting Magazine!

In the third week, something happened. The family was driving around sight-seeing when they realized that they were getting lost in the California desert. Mary and Frank began to argue, and right in the midst of it, the moment they had waited six years for finally came. “I remember he said a seven-word sentence basically to the effect of ‘I want you two to stop fighting.’ And it shocked me so much that I almost stopped breathing,” Frank recounts. “I looked at my wife and said ‘Do you realize what just happened? He just said a seven-word sentence.’ I had tears in my eyes, and I was happy at the same time. He was so upset that it pushed these words through.”

From there, Frankie’s progress snowballed. They returned home after only a month, but the difference between the child who arrived in California and the one who left was striking. They had taken a video of Frankie on the plane when they started the journey, “and he’s just making baby babble,” Frank says. “We have another video of him on the plane coming back. And he looks out the window and says, ‘Goodbye California, see you soon.’ This was a nonverbal kid, 30 days later. And his feet are flat on the ground.”

Doctors said Frankie would continue to improve even without regular MeRT albeit a bit slower. Today, he is 11 years old, verbal, and attends a public school. He tells Frank stories about times when he wanted to speak but couldn’t. “He goes ‘You know, I’m so glad we went to the brain treatment because now I can talk,’” says Frank.

The Role of MeRT in Addressing Autism

No two cases of autism are the same. Each child is unique and has different severity levels. Even if a child is on a similar “level” as another, they can still have their own unique symptoms, ways of dealing with the outside world, and ways of communicating.

That’s why MeRT treatment protocols are so different. We tailor treatment for each patient to help restore their brain to a more optimal degree of normalcy. Each patient will have a different starting point based on where they are on the spectrum, but regardless of where they start from, we often see improvements in brain function and a reduction in symptoms.*

MeRT protocols work by neuromodulating brain waves. This optimizes brain communication, which helps it become more organized and in sync. As a result, a child may function at a higher level, and have better communication skills, more independence, and improved social skills.* And this can mean a higher quality of life for both the patient and the parent.

“We’ve seen some promising results in autism.”

“EEGs (electrical pictures of the brain) can tell us when there are abnormalities in neural networks. … And we run that data through a normative database, and we can see, for example, if somebody has an area in the left prefrontal cortex that’s cycling at two Hertz — which means that they may be only processing information two times per second — whereas the rest of their brain may be cycling eleven times per second. …

“[MeRT] was engineered to be a brain optimization technology where we’re trying to increase the coherence, [so] different areas of the brain can communicate with each other and improve the metabolic efficiency of the brain.

With that in mind, we do see some improvements across a number of different dimensions. We’ve seen some improvements and some promising results in autism.”

Meet our Medical Director

World-renowned Neurosurgeon Mark Liker, MD, FAANS, FACS, is the founder and CEO of BrainStim Centers, Inc., with clinics located in Calabasas and Valencia, California. “Our mission is to provide a professional & honest approach to health care”

Dr. Liker expects the highest standard of care and equipment not only in his private practice but in his TMS and MeRT Clinics as well.

As a neurosurgeon, I recognize that the accuracy of my equipment means the difference between an effective and ineffective treatment. Our patients rely on this as well. Many have relied on either medication or therapy. However, MeRT, or Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy, offers an innovative, non-invasive option to target critical brain pathways associated with a variety of diseases.”
DR. MARK LIKER

Dr. Liker is proud to offer MeRT to treat autism, as it may offer new hope for so many patients affected by the many and varied symptoms of this diagnosis.

How do you know…

Is MeRT the Right Treatment?

It’s difficult to know, just from reading this, if MeRT is the right treatment for your child. Because we understand this, we know that your first step needs to be a simple one: a phone consultation with our New Patient Coordinator. During this call, you can discuss symptoms and history, ask questions, and have her explain the protocols, fees, and treatment details.

Initial Testing and Analysis

Then, if you are interested in taking the next step, we can set up an appointment for an EEG (a simple, non-invasive brain scan) and a second appointment for a consultation with our clinician.

Once the EEG and other testing have been done and before your consultation, neurosurgeon Dr. Mark Liker, our Medical Director, will thoroughly review your test results and determine if you may benefit from MeRT and the exact treatment plan for the best possible results.

Once we have analyzed the test results, you will have a one-on-one consultation with our clinician to discuss the results and details of the treatment plan. You can either attend this appointment in person or, if you wish, you can attend virtually.

During this time, you will discuss your symptoms and the treatment protocols with you. You can also ask further questions so that together, you can determine if you are a candidate for treatment.

Assessment Period

If you and the clinician both determine that MeRT may be the right treatment, the next step is an Assessment Period. This entails a short period of treatment, followed by a new EEG, to see if you are responding to the treatment.

We assess this based on the new EEG results, as well as symptom improvements. If there is a positive response to treatment during the assessment period, you will have likely noticed some improvements. At that point, we can schedule the rest of the treatment.

So, as you can see, there are many steps involved in ensuring that you receive the treatment that will benefit you.

She says that he has been crushing the prescribed program — he scored significantly above expectations at the latest eval. And he’s speeding through the stages.

We are thrilled by Immanuel’s progress and the fact that he can play with other kids — he’s had numerous play dates at our house, and they’ve gone well. This touches our hearts more than anything — that he has friends now.

Again, thank you for making this treatment available and for your guiding us through the process.” – David and Debbie J.

Hear it from the Parents…

“We are dropping a line to thank you for your help last summer with Immanuel. Our family is RVing this weekend and marveling at how well Immanuel now socializes with other children at the campsite.

We were here last year around the same time, and he needed constant play supervision because he kept arguing and trying to control play. This weekend he’s able to go along with what others are playing.

He is also at a private school with no Special Ed teacher to support him, ande is able to succeed without the extra support. It’s a small classroom, but last year it would have been impossible. Immanuel has made such strides socially, with nonverbal cues, being flexible, and regulating his frustrations.

His occupational therapist has been amazed as well. She evaluated him before he started treatment with you, but started therapy AFTER we returned from Texas.
