There is Hope for a wide array of Conditions Treated with MeRT and TMS
There are a number of conditions treated that have shown significant improvement. MeRT is an emerging technology that is seeing some astounding results. Possibly you have tried other therapies or treatments that did not work, or that caused unpleasant side effects, or perhaps these did provide some help, but you are still not experiencing significant relief. If any of this is the case, don’t give up! MeRT may be the help you have been seeking.
BrainStim Centers, with clinics located in Calabasas and Valencia, California, is making this incredible technology available to you! MeRT has been shown to be successful when medications haven’t worked or have caused more serious side effects. MeRT is also a treatment that can be used in conjunction with other therapies, and many of our patients have reported that MeRT can also improve the success of accompanying therapies.
As well, BrainStim Centers also offer NexStim, another technology utilizing highly tailored TMS treatment.
You don’t have to decide whether MeRT or NexStim are right for you. There are multiple steps involved in making this decision. Talk to our New Patient Coordinator to get more information. If you are interested, get the initial testing done, followed by a consultation with our clinician to see if you may benefit from these treatments. If you and the clinician decide to move forward, next is an initial test period to see if you respond to this treatment. At this point, you are in a position to decide if full treatment is right for you.

What is MeRT?
MeRT, which stands for Magnetic Resonance Therapy, is a non-pharmaceutical and non-invasive treatment used for various types of brain dysregulation. This treatment utilizes Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, which is also referred to as TMS. TMS in and of itself is more of a one size fits all method of treatment since it uses a fixed frequency to target one single area of the brain.
MeRT is highly customized to each individual’s brain based on the results of very comprehensive diagnostics. Each treatment protocol is completely tailored to each individual’s specific condition based on the location, frequency, and amount of power used by the magnet.
In simple terms, we will employ the use of noninvasive magnetic waves directed at specific areas of the brain that are not communicating or connecting as they should, to gently stimulate those regions.
With the thorough diagnostics that we have used to isolate exactly what is happening in each patient’s brain, your customized treatment plan is developed to stimulate and “wake up” regions of the brain that have been affected by a variety of neurological conditions. Whether you are receiving MeRT or Nexstim, a vast array of benefits, improvements, and in many cases miraculous achievements have been seen.
You will simply sit in a comfortable chair while a trained technician carefully positions a simple device on your head. This device produces a magnetic field to induce mild magnetic currents in targeted regions of the brain. There is no pain and no electrical currents, just a slight sensation.
The technician will apply the stimulation for 6-8 seconds per minute. A typical appointment is 45 minutes, 30 minutes of which involves stimulation.
The neuromodulation equipment used by the MeRT approach has been cleared by the FDA in the treatment of depression and OCD, and may be used off-label for other disorders in the practice of medicine.
The Miracle of the Human Brain!
There are approximately 100 billion neurons in the human brain.
In simple terms, your brain operates through populations of neurons interacting with each other. Much of this interaction is through tiny electrical oscillations or brain waves.
There are many different factors that can disrupt the neurons in your brain. The activity between your neurons can be adversely affected by factors such as:
- Illness or Disease
- A serious injury to the head or repeated head injuries
- Exposure to toxic chemicals
- Harmful addiction
- Developmental disorders such as Autism, Learning disorders, ADD, ADHD
- Trauma, extreme stress or anxiety
- Congenital conditions
These disruptions can be minor or significant. One’s threshold of tolerance varies from individual to individual. Some people are still able to function in their day-to-day activities, while others are completely debilitated and have no quality of life. However, with a little gentle stimulation in the right direction, very often brain function can be improved.
Renewed Hope for a Brighter Future!
The MeRT Approach to Autism: A Non-Invasive and Drug-Free Therapy
A diagnosis of Autism can be daunting and life-changing. Treatment using MeRT has shown to be highly effective in many cases of Autism in improving symptoms and quality of life.
MeRT(sm) stands for Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy. The Brain Treatment Center uses FDA-cleared equipment that generates a gentle magnetic field to balance and stimulate brain function, guided by sophisticated diagnostics and imaging which improves how the brain processes information and can result in greatly reduced symptoms and improved quality of life.
The Role of MeRT in Addressing Autism
No two cases of Autism are the same. Each child is unique and has different severity levels. Even if a child is on a similar “level” as another, they can still have their own unique symptoms, ways of dealing with the outside world, and ways of communicating.
MeRT treatment protocols are tailored for each patient to help restore their brain to a more optimal degree of normalcy, based on each individual child. Each patient will have a different starting point based on where they are on the spectrum, but regardless of where they start from, improvements are generally seen and brain function is improved. *
MeRT protocols work by neuromodulating brain waves. This optimizes brain communication which helps it to be more organized and in sync. This allows the child to be higher functioning, and in most cases, to have better communication skills, social skills, and more independence. This allows for a higher quality of life for both the patient and the parent.
*Results can vary from patient to patient

We Are Happy to Discuss Your Specific Situation
Nexstim is another option for Treatment of Depression
When depressed, specific areas of your brain are underactive. TMS uses magnetic pulses to stimulate the nerves in the brain. Boosting nerve activity leads to an increase in neurotransmitters, which in turn can alleviate the symptoms of depression.
The team at BrainStim Centers performs TMS therapy using Nexstim SmartFocus® TMS technology. The Nexstim system is able to precisely locate the underactive areas of the brain using a 3D image created from an MRI.
During your treatment, the Nexstim device administers repetitive magnetic pulses in a way that only affects the targeted area. Since your information is programmed into the Nexstim, you can be sure that every session consistently treats the same area.
While relaxing in the Nexstim chair, a tracker will be placed on your forehead. The tracker engages with the system so the equipment and computer can follow the exact location for delivering the pulses.
When the device is placed near your head, it will deliver subtle magnetic pulses which is the beginning of your session.
Each session time will vary. The first session typically takes around 60 minutes to load the MRI, conduct the brain navigation, and administer the initial treatment. This data will be saved in the computer and subsequent visits typically take 30 minutes from start to finish.
Typically there are 36 sessions. The best results are seen with consistent daily attendance to each appointment.

Take the easy Steps to Determine if MeRT is the Right Treatment
We understand that you may not feel certain whether MeRT is the right treatment for you or your loved one. MeRT is a relatively new, cutting-edge treatment and you may not have heard as much about it yet. But this is not a decision that you need to make. There are multiple steps to take to determine if MeRT is the correct treatment.
First, you should talk with our New Patient Coordinator. She is here to help, to listen, explain and answer any questions you have. You can discuss your symptoms and history. She can explain the protocols, details of treatment, and fees. You can ask her all the questions you want.
Initial Testing and Analysis
Then, if you are interested in taking the next step, we can set up an appointment for an EEG (a simple, non-invasive brain scan) and a second appointment for a consultation with our clinician. Once the EEG and other testing have been done and before your consultation, neurosurgeon Dr. Mark Liker, our Medical Director, will thoroughly review your test results and determine if you may benefit from MeRT and the exact treatment plan for the best possible results.
Once we have analyzed the test results, you will have a one-on-one consultation with our clinician to discuss the results and details of the treatment plan. You can either attend this appointment in person or, if you wish, you can attend virtually. During this time, you will discuss your symptoms and the treatment protocols. You can also ask further questions so that together, you can determine if you are a candidate for treatment.
Assessment Period
Following this, if you and the clinician both determine that MeRT may be the right treatment, the next step is an Assessment Period. This entails a short period of treatment, followed by a new EEG, in order to see if you are responding to the treatment.
This is determined by comparing the new EEG results to the first EEG that was done before treatment started. Symptom improvements are also thoroughly assessed.
If there is a positive response to treatment during the assessment period, you will have likely noticed some improvements starting to take place, and we can then schedule for the additional treatment duration.
So, as you can see, there are many steps involved in ensuring that you receive only treatment that will benefit you.
